{"id":368,"date":"2012-05-04T10:08:28","date_gmt":"2012-05-04T10:08:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.happycyclist.org\/?p=368"},"modified":"2012-05-04T10:08:28","modified_gmt":"2012-05-04T10:08:28","slug":"why-do-you-ride-in-the-middle-of-the-lane-past-topp-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/happycyclist.grahamecooper.com\/?p=368","title":{"rendered":"Why do you &#8230; ride in the middle of the lane past Topp Way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the approach to the junction between Higher Bridge Street and Topp Way in Bolton.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/happycyclist.grahamecooper.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/BlogPictures\/WhyDoYou\/HrBridgeStreet2.jpg\" alt=\"Approaching Topp Way on  Higher Bridge Street\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is a tricky junction because it is very busy, it involves climbing a fairly steep hill on the approach, it has a very narrow, inadequate &#8220;cycle lane&#8221; leading up to it, and the exit side of the junction is really not wide enough for motor vehicles to pass cyclists safely.<\/p>\n<p>So, if I can, I try to take the centre of the lane (&#8220;primary position&#8221;) before the junction and hold it until I am past the narrow part after the junction:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/happycyclist.grahamecooper.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/BlogPictures\/WhyDoYou\/HrBridgeStreet1.jpg\" alt=\"Primary position approaching the junction.\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, it is difficult to get into the primary position because of the traffic, and that&#8217;s when bad things happen:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MmaU9WzUGb8\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H2Z4NRjar8I\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qXV5tXqJozs\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the approach to the junction between Higher Bridge Street and Topp Way in Bolton.
