People need cycling and walking routes that go past the places they need to get to. Very few of those destinations are on canal towpaths or old railway lines; they are on the road network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Off-road routes are also <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/annkol\/status\/1325124110746181632?s=19\" target=\"_blank\">inaccessible to most people<\/a> for much of the time because they are almost always remote, unlit, unpopulated and unsafe.
